Guided Imagery:
For thousands of years humanity has shared in and learned through the medium of stories and imagery. Whether in the spellbinding atmosphere of a tale told around a blazing fire, or in the cosy comfort of a dazzling bedtime story, myths and fairy tales hold an everlasting fascination over the human mind and heart.

There is increasing evidence that the imagination and the sub-conscious mind are very powerful tools when it comes to psychological exploration and healing. We now know that the brain is a pattern matching organ using metaphor to communicate and to make sense of the world (Griffin and Tyrell, 2003). Therefore, legends, myths, and tales go far beyond entertainment or moral education: they link us to the archetypal* dimension of our human experience. Hence, the use of guided imagery , with the therapist assisting you into a relaxed state of mind where your sub-conscious mind can be engaged, is invaluable in overcoming old patterns and creating new circuits that will impact on future thoughts, feelings, and behaviour. The beauty is that you are in control of the exercise; the imagery arises out of your own mind and provides the symbols and stories that are relevant and useful to you. This exercise is typically around 15 or 20 minutes and can be part of your counselling session. * click here for a definition of Archetypes |
